This increase in remote work opportunities is affecting how job seekers, especially those in the IT industry where remote work is particularly feasible, evaluate job offers. In fact, many people prefer working remotely rather than coming into the office. Research shows 70 percent of millennials say theyd rather telecommute than work in the office, and this statistic reflects the overall attitude that remote work is an incentive to employees. While working remotely has its advantages, is it really for everyone? Anthony Curlo, the CEO of IT recruiting and staff augmentation firm DaVinciTek, argues that while some studies show remote work can lead to more engaged and happier employees, it is not ideal for all professionals and should not be a key factor in all job searches. Though remote work has become a key consideration for job-seeking professionals, Curlo says candidates must know themselves before making remote work an influential factor in a job search. Though there are an abundance of remote work opportunities for those in the IT industry, candidates must be honest about their own ability to handle the heightened responsibilities and expectations that accompany remote work, Curlo says. Jobs that dont offer remote work therefore shouldnt be discounted on that reason alone. Only professionals who are truly self-motivated and self-directed will be successful as remote workers. Employers will expect the same productivity, if not more, when employees work remotely. If professionals find it difficult to be motivated without supervision, remote work will ultimately lead to poor performance reviews. Curlo provides additional advice on working remotely: 1. Remote workers must be capable of managing their performance Remote work is only ideal for driven employees who can manage and measure their own performance. Remote work eliminates the case for micromanaging, but some employees may need to be more intensely managed to ensure they are putting out their best work. While digital media makes it simple to communicate when working from home, a remote worker may have fewer resources to reach out to for guidance. 2. Remote workers must be self-motivated Research from Gallup’s State of the American Workplace shows workers tend to clock in more time â€" up to four hours more a week â€" when they work from home. While some employees are self-motivated to succeed, others need to be in a workplace environment to stay motivated, Curlo says. When working remotely, employees may have more time from the time they saved from not commuting or socializing. But, while some employees are putting in more work, others may be actually doing less and clocking in more time. Though its the responsibility of the employee to perform all their duties to the best of their ability, its also the job of the employer to manage the time sheets to detect any changes in productivity. 3. Dont let working remotely hinder collaboration While web conferencing and file sharing capabilities make it easy to collaborate with other employees from home, some employees benefit from face-to-face interactions. Job seekers must distinguish the extent to which a jobs responsibilities rely on collaboration and communication before using remote work opportunities as a primary criterion for accepting a position. Isolation could hinder critical accessibility, Curlo says. There are two sides to every story, and the same goes for remote work. While remote work has many advantages, it’s not for everyone. Four traits of a successful job seeker I spend hours each week working with job seekers on their career goals and aspirations. Often, what makes someone stand out from other candidates isnt what youd think. Its not their education or technical expertise. Its rarely how many certifications they have. Successful job seekers work to become their best at a few key traits, including confidence, persistence, creativity, and positivity. These traits dont take tons of money to develop, but they do take time and effort. By honing thees traits, you will put yourself in front of the competition. Confidence Successful job seekers believe in themselves and their abilities. They are comfortable communicating why they are the best candidate for the job. And, even if they dont have all of the qualifications preferred, they can easily explain how they will grow their skills. Bottom line, they are comfortable being their own sales person. They realize that their talents are the service theyre selling and they realize theyre the best salesman for the job. Persistence Most people who consistently land good job after good job are very persistent. Just because they dont get every interview or job offer, they keep moving. They also stay in touch with companies who have turned them down, in hopes of building a relationship for future opportunities. They know the right job could be around the very next corner, or the last corner. They dont take things personally and they work to create lasting relationships. Creativity The best job seekers are also creative in their search. They may apply online for the jobs theyre interested, but they dont stop there. They look for ways to connect to employers outside of the typical internet process. They understand that hundreds of people apply for every job online, and they want to find a way to stand out and to connect offline. Look for these people at networking meetings, and researching employers on LinkedIn. Positivity Great job seekers experience disappointment, just like everyone else. They encounter lots of nos before they get a yes. And sometimes, they get offers they have to turn down. But, they keep moving forward and stay positive. They know that the right attitude will help to land them right right job. As you can see, finding a job often has more to do with resilience than with job requirements. Making up 100 reasons why you arent getting hired doesnt help you. But, thinking of the 100 reasons you should get hired will. Stay focused on the positives and stay in the game. Apply for jobs you know you can do, even if you dont meet every requirement. Be ready to explain how you get overcome any knowledge gaps. In addition, you shouldnt expect your next job to happen immediately. Its a process that takes time. Its very rare for someone to find a job the day they decide theyd like one. Sometimes, it appears that this is happening because you dont hear about someones new job until they announce it. In all likelihood though, they were working on getting hired for a long time. Some might compare job searching to farming. You have to plan seeds, water them, and then be patient. Eventually, with the right nutrients, your plants will grow. Looking for a job is the same way.
